Minor procedures refer to non-life-threatening procedures and treatments for acute injuries. This includes sutures (stitches) and their removal, care for lacerations, incisions and drainages, to name a few. Qualified treatment and care for minor injuries in a specialized clinic is essential to minimize healthcare costs and to reduce the stress put on hospital emergency rooms.
What is minor surgery in primary care?
A minor surgical procedure typically includes any procedure that is minimally invasive, can be safely performed in an outpatient setting and without the need for respiratory assistance. Coastal Primary Care and Wellness performs such procedures in a safe, sterile environment, using a local anesthetic delivered by either an injection or a topical cream.
A minor surgical procedure is an operation often performed using a local anesthetic. When the anesthetic is administered, it may cause a slight stinging sensation which will pass very quickly. After the area has been anesthetized, you should not feel any sharp pain. When the anesthetic has worn off (in a few hours) you may require a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as acetaminophen, but stronger pain relief is not usually required.
In some cases, complications may arise, including wound infection, breakdown of the wound and sometimes numbness in the vicinity of the wound. Excessive bleeding can be a problem, especially if the patient is taking an anti-coagulant. Other complications are very rare.
Who is qualified to perform minor procedures?
At Coastal Primary Care and Wellness, we have an acute care nurse practitioner that has many years of experience working in an ER. Acute care nurse practitioners hold an important position in the medical field. They work with patients who may be suffering from severe and chronic conditions, or who may be in critical care.
Acute care nurse practitioners provide immediate assistance to patients in acute care. Much like physicians, they are responsible for diagnosing and treating patients and often work together. Given the urgency of some acute medical conditions, nurse practitioners must act quickly, with their decision-making process significantly impacting the lives of patients. Their specialties range from conducting invasive procedures to treating serious injuries. They can conduct a wide variety of tasks in the management of treatment plans, from handling patient records to performing diagnostic and minor procedures. Nurse practitioners are also typically responsible for taking care of patients before and after operations and often work very closely with patients.
